SECTORS

We have extensive experience across industry sectors
ranging from large multi-national organisations to regional
NZ-based clients.

Sector

Primary Sector

The core challenges in the primary sector – food and fibre – include productivity and sustainability in production, innovation and access to international markets. Success in these endeavours is vital to the ongoing competitiveness of New Zealand’s primary sector and its supporting businesses. Emerging challenges include adapting to increasingly stringent regulations.

We have experience advising agri-businesses and understand the value chain from field to plate. This has included strategic advice to farmers, growers, processing companies, exporters, distribution, and retail as well as developing innovation and IP in the primary sector.

We understand the on-farm components of the primary sector. Dr James Morrison Consulting led the Strategy for Sustainable Dairy Farming 2013, a pivotal moment for the dairy sector. We have developed strategies for various other primary sectors across agriculture, horticulture and apiculture. We have also conducted deep reviews including the pan-sector 2016 Forage Strategy, genetic improvement, sector capability, and extension strategies to farmers and growers.

We understand regulation, and have been a special advisor to the government’s Primary Production Select Committee, as well as preparing regulatory submissions for numerous primary sector clients. We have also advised clients on the effects of regulation in export markets.

Whether you are a a processor, an exporter or retailer, or a peak body representing primary producers, we can assist you to develop a clear strategy for the future and improve your business performance.

Transport-and-Logistics

Transport and Logistics Sector

The transportation and logistics sector is dynamic, with a convergence of digital technologies, diverse new green transport options, volatile energy markets, challenging labour markets and new business models emerging to drive intense competition.

We have experience in transport and logistics across multiple engagements, from reviewing a multinational freight JV, to working out how to improve the last-mile in parcel delivery for a national operator.

We also understand that sometimes transport and logistics companies are fuel companies, negotiating complex risk- and value-sharing arrangements on both the supply-side and with customers. We understand the importance of managing the risks, and understanding potential impacts on financial outcomes.

Government Sector

Government Sector

Government organisations must deliver multiple objectives, satisfying a diverse range of stakeholders. The complexities of asset management, investment allocation and economic outcomes are compounded by policy objectives and political considerations.

We bring clarity and business acumen from our experience in key commercial sectors to bear on engagements with government, and clients seeking outcomes from government.

Specifically, we have assisted government with independent performance reviews of some of its largest state-owned enterprises. Our comprehensive review of Landcorp for the Treasury in 2020 was widely reported. We have also acted as a special advisor to the government’s Primary Production Select Committee.

We have assisted commercial clients with submissions on policy proposals and legislative reviews. This includes both industry restructuring and, most recently, submissions on the proposed entry of agriculture into the Emissions Trading Scheme.

Sports Management Sector

Sports Management Sector

The business of sport demands a balance between the interests of participants in the broader game, the desire to win at an elite level, and the need for commercial sustainability. This challenge is invariably brought into focus when sports organisations are contemplating change – but also when events occur outside their control such as the covid-19 pandemic.

We have worked with leading sports organisations in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa in elite sport. This has included forming partnerships between national sports organisations, and in consulting with wider stakeholders including players and regional administrators. We understand the commercial requirements of broadcasting and sponsorship partners, and have developed financial models to support negotiations. As a specific example, Dr James Morrison Consulting advised in the establishment of the ANZ Netball Championship.

We also understand the importance of participation in sport, and the community game. We have advised provincial sports organisations in matters of both strategy and operational planning with a specific focus on developing community participation.

Dr James Morrison has worked in the governance of sport. He served 5 years as a director on the board of Touch New Zealand, and has conducted governance reviews of sports bodies including the International Rugby Board.

Other Sectors

Other Sectors

Our value proposition to clients relies on our experience across multiple sectors and businesses, and having a rigorous fact-based problem solving approach. While we have our deepest expertise in the primary sector, transport and logistics, government and sports management, we also have experience in many other sectors.

In energy and utilities we have extensive experience across both electricity and gas utilities, from upstream gas production and reticulation to the retail environment, and from electricity generation to local lines companies. We have created agent-based models to predict energy price-paths for investment decisions, and also developed processes, operational plans and service level agreements for utility companies. We can assist in organisational design and other specific operational areas. In terms of deep expertise, Dr James Morrison’s PhD thesis is in the design of thermal power generation systems.

In communications and media we have experience developing consumer and business strategies in multiple countries, focusing on what drives value for customers and how companies can lead their markets. This experience also includes system dynamic modeling of competitive market dynamics, leveraging models of customer value over time to create insightful scenarios and understand market responses to product innovations and price competition. We have worked with call centres and corporate sales teams, in the “engine room”, creating processes and incentive structures, as well as designing market research and driving service delivery improvement.

From time to time we have been engaged by organisations as diverse as building products, property valuation, real estate, quality assurance, medical products, consumer packaging and vehicle testing. We value each client, and enjoy the opportunity to help solve challenging problems.
